Doug is a qualified guide for the Nature Conservancy hikes on Bluff Mountain in Ashe County. Although relatively small in size, Bluff Mountain is one of the most ecologically significant sites in the Southeast, as the mountain's unique geology, hydrology and ecology intertwine to create an unusual mixture of habitats and wildlife. The mountain is distinguished by over 11 natural communities that provide a fertile home for over 450 species of plants. Since the mid-1800s, naturalists have explored this ancient landscape, cataloging its many unique natural communities and species. Bluff Mountain hikes are conducted on Saturdays and Sundays by reservation only. The cost is $10 per person or a minimum of $50. Takes 3-4 hours, bring a lunch.
